NarendraModi

नरेन्द्र मोदी

Five of his nine planets crowd into one 20° strip of sky. Three of them share a single degree.

17 SEP 1950 · VADNAGAR, GUJARAT

TL;DR

Nine planets. One crowded corner.

Most birth charts spread their nine grahas around the wheel. Narendra Modi's kundli does the opposite: five of the nine pile into two neighbouring signs, Leo and Virgo — a strip of sky under 20° wide.
Zoom in and it gets tighter. Saturn, the Sun and an exalted Mercury sit inside 1.13° of each other, straddling the Leo–Virgo boundary. The Sun and Mercury are barely a fifth of a degree apart. Four of those five grahas also share a single nakshatra, Uttara Phalguni.

The counterweight sits on the far side of the wheel: a debilitated Moon in Scorpio — except Scorpio's own ruler, Mars, is right there in its own sign. Every one of those facts is settled by his birth date alone, which matters here, because his birth time is not verified. So you will find no houses, no lagna and no dated dasha periods anywhere on this page.

17 Sept 1950 Vadnagar, then Bombay State
  • He was born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, in Gujarat's Mehsana district — at the time part of Bombay State.
  • By his own account, he worked on and off at his father's tea stall at Vadnagar railway station as a boy. That detail comes from him; we report it as his account, not as an independently documented fact.
  • He was introduced to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the age of eight.

  • He became a full-time pracharak — a full-time organisational worker — for the RSS in 1971, and a sambhag pracharak in 1978.
  • The role was organisational rather than electoral: a long stretch of unelected, behind-the-scenes work before any public office.
🔭 The chart bit: Saturn is the graha traditionally tied to long, unglamorous, structural work. His sits at the very last degree of Leo — 29°39' — and is combust, burnt up by a Sun less than a degree away.

Three consecutive terms

26 May 2014 sworn in as Prime Minister
  • He was sworn in as Prime Minister of India on 26 May 2014, and has been the Member of Parliament for Varanasi since 5 June 2014.
  • He was sworn in for a second term in May 2019 and a third on 9 June 2024.
  • In September 2014 he used his UN General Assembly address to propose an annual International Day of Yoga. The draft resolution was introduced on 11 December 2014 with 177 co-sponsoring nations, and the day was first observed on 21 June 2015.
🔭 The chart bit: a fair question is which mahadasha covers this stretch. We cannot tell you — and we show our working in the lesson below. Depending on the birth minute, it is Rahu, Mars or Moon. That is not an answer, so we do not print one.
Said vs computed

What astrologers say — and what we actually compute

His is probably the most publicly discussed chart in India. Plenty gets asserted about it. Here is each popular claim next to what our engine can and cannot verify from the data that actually exists.

👑 "His kundli has a raj yoga"
What astrologers say

A raj yoga — literally a "royal combination" — is one of the most frequently discussed features of his chart in public astrology commentary, and "Modi raj yoga kundli" is a genuinely common search.

What we compute

We cannot confirm one, and neither can anyone else without a verified birth minute. Nearly every classical raj yoga is defined by house lords — which planet rules the 9th, which rules the 10th, and whether they connect. Houses require the exact minute of birth. His is not verified.

What we can state from the date alone: Mercury is exalted and Mars is in its own sign. Those are real strengths in the chart, and they are sign-level facts. Calling them a named raj yoga is a step the data does not support.

🌑 "He is running a Rahu mahadasha"
What astrologers say

Which mahadasha he is currently in is asserted confidently and often — Rahu being the most common answer in circulation.

What we compute

It is not determinable. We ran his chart at ten-minute intervals across all 24 hours of 17 September 1950. The mahadasha running today comes out as Rahu, Mars or Moon depending on which minute you pick.

The reason is mechanical: the Moon moves about 13° a day and a nakshatra is only 13°20' wide, so the Moon's position within its nakshatra — the thing that sets the whole dasha clock — sweeps almost the entire span in one day. His first mahadasha's end date lands anywhere between 1950 and 1969 across that sweep. So: order yes, dates no.

🗳️ "What does his chart say about 2029?"
What people search

Election-year prediction queries are among the most searched things attached to his name — 2024, 2026, 2029. Plenty of sites answer them.

What we compute

Nothing. We do not publish election predictions, for him or for anyone. That is a fixed editorial rule here, not a judgement about him.

Two reasons. First, an election is a public event with millions of participants; a single person's birth chart is not a mechanism for forecasting one. Second, and more simply, the timing tools you would need — dashas with real dates — are unavailable in this chart, as shown directly above.

Being straight with you: this page describes a birth chart and a public record. It takes no position on Narendra Modi, his party, his policies or Indian politics, and nothing here should be read as support for or criticism of any of them. Astrological interpretation is offered for entertainment and education. Where a claim needs a birth time we do not have, we say so instead of guessing.
The two headline configurations

Two things in this chart that are genuinely unusual

🔭  Five grahas, one corner of the wheel

  • Venus at Leo 15°41', Saturn at Leo 29°39', the Sun at Virgo 0°35', Mercury at Virgo 0°47' and Ketu at Virgo 5°13'. That is five of nine grahas inside a 19.5° arc.
  • Saturn, Sun and Mercury span just 1.13° between them. The Sun and Mercury are 0.19° apart — closer together than the width of the Moon in the sky.
  • A pile-up like this is called a stellium. It concentrates a chart: several departments of life running through the same narrow slice of sky instead of spread across it.
  • Two casualties come with the crowding. Mercury and Saturn both sit close enough to the Sun to be combust — traditionally read as being outshone by it.

🔭 Also worth noting: four of those five — Saturn, Sun, Mercury and Ketu — share one nakshatra, Uttara Phalguni, which is ruled by the Sun. Four grahas in one lunar mansion is uncommon.

🌗  A debilitated Moon with its own landlord next door

  • His Moon is in Scorpio, the sign where the Moon is traditionally at its weakest — its debilitation sign. That holds at every minute of the day, so it needs no birth time.
  • But Scorpio is ruled by Mars — and Mars is sitting right there in Scorpio too, in its own sign, at 0°55'.
  • Classical texts have a name for that arrangement: neecha bhanga, roughly "cancellation of debilitation". The idea is that a weakened planet sitting with a strong sign-ruler is partly propped back up.
  • Read plainly: the chart's most obviously weak placement is also the one with a strong neighbour holding the lease on the same sign.

🔭 The honest caveat: how much neecha bhanga actually rescues is argued about by astrologers, and the strictest versions of the rule also involve houses — which we do not have. What is not arguable is the raw configuration: debilitated Moon, own-sign Mars, same sign.

What the sky wrote

Four placements. Four receipts.

Each card pairs one computed placement with a real photograph of Modi himself, from a different documented occasion — never a picture of the planet.

MERCURY · VIRGO 0°47'
EXALTED · RETRO · COMBUST
Mercury · exalted in Virgo · the chart's strongest placement

The best-placed planet in the chart — and the most interfered with

  • Mercury runs speech, analysis and organisation. Virgo is its exaltation sign, the one place it works at full strength. His sits there, at 0°47'.
  • It is also retrograde, and combust — just 0.19° from the Sun, a smaller gap than the width of the full Moon in the sky. Classical texts read a combust planet as outshone: peak equipment, swamped conditions.
  • Exalted and burnt in the same breath is genuinely unusual, and it is the single most distinctive thing our engine returns for this chart.
🔭 Mercury in Virgo 0°47' — exalted, retrograde, combust. The chart's only exalted graha, sitting a fifth of a degree from the Sun.

SATURN · LEO 29°39'
COMBUST
Saturn · Leo 29°39' · combust

The discipline planet, standing on the last degree of its sign

  • Saturn governs patience, structure and long unglamorous work. His sits at Leo 29°39' — about twenty-one arcminutes from crossing into Virgo. In practice it is on the doorstep of the next sign.
  • It is combust as well, 0.94° from the Sun. Two of his nine grahas are burnt, and both of them are in this cluster.
  • Its nakshatra has already changed even though its sign has not: Saturn is in Uttara Phalguni, the same lunar mansion as the Sun, Mercury and Ketu. Sign boundaries and nakshatra boundaries do not line up.
🔭 Saturn in Leo 29°39' — combust, Uttara Phalguni pada 1. The last degree of a sign, in the same nakshatra as three other grahas.
Narendra Modi speaking after receiving the UN Environment 'Champions of the Earth' award, New Delhi, 3 October 2018
MOON · SCORPIO 8°48'
DEBILITATED
Moon · Scorpio · debilitated · the chart's one weak spot

The one weak placement — with a caveat sitting right beside it

  • The Moon runs instinct, mood and the mind. Scorpio is its debilitation sign, the single spot where it is traditionally weakest. His is at Scorpio 8°48'.
  • This one needs no birth time at all. We ran his chart at ten-minute intervals across the whole day, and the Moon was in Scorpio and debilitated at every single one of those 144 charts.
  • What sits next to it changes the reading: Mars, which rules Scorpio, is in the same sign in its own house — the arrangement classical texts call neecha bhanga.
  • Its nakshatra is Anuradha for 92.2% of that day, crossing over from Vishakha at about 01:53 IST — and the nakshatra is what fixes his dasha order.
🔭 Moon in Scorpio 8°48' — debilitated, Anuradha pada 2. Sign and dignity hold all day; the nakshatra holds for 92.2% of it.
Narendra Modi speaking at a business breakfast hosted by the Premier of Queensland at Customs House, Brisbane, 17 November 2014
MARS · SCORPIO 0°55'
OWN SIGN
Mars · Scorpio · own sign · the only graha on home ground

The one planet in this chart that owns the room it is standing in

  • Mars governs drive, stamina and confrontation. Scorpio is one of the two signs it rules, so here it needs nobody's permission. His sits at Scorpio 0°55', barely inside the door.
  • It is the only graha in the chart on home ground — and it happens to be sharing that sign with the chart's only debilitated planet.
  • Its nakshatra is still Vishakha: Mars crosses into Scorpio well before it would cross into Anuradha. Another place where the two boundary systems disagree.
🔭 Mars in Scorpio 0°55' — own sign, Vishakha pada 4. The chart's only own-sign placement, in the same sign as its only debilitated one.

The charts people look for next

A large share of the searches that land on a page like this are comparative — people arrive wanting to put two political kundlis side by side. Vedic astrology does have a formal chart-comparison system, the 36-point guna Milan, though it was built for marriage matching rather than for anything else.

We are not going to run a comparison here, and the reason is the same one that runs through this whole page: a Milan score needs two verified birth charts, and his birth time is not verified. A score built on a guessed minute would look precise and mean nothing. The related pages below are on their way.

Actually learn this

Astrology, but make it make sense

Zero background needed. Read this once and you can decode the birth chart above yourself — no astrologer required.

LESSON 01

What a birth chart even is

A kundli, or janam kundli, is a photo of the sky from the exact spot and second someone was born. Where each planet was sitting, frozen.

Vedic astrology treats that snapshot as the raw material a person was handed — not their fate, their starting kit.

His: 17 September 1950, Vadnagar. That sky had the Sun, Mercury and Ketu in Virgo, Venus and Saturn in Leo, the Moon and Mars in Scorpio, Jupiter in Aquarius and Rahu in Pisces. Those placements do all the talking on this page.
LESSON 02

The planets, and what each one does

Nine of them, or navagraha. Think of them as nine departments, each running one part of a life.

PlanetRunsWhere his is
☉ Sunego, authority, the selfVirgo 0°35'
☾ Mooninstinct, mind, moodScorpio 8°48' ↓ weakest
♂ Marsdrive, aggression, the bodyScorpio 0°55' ↑ own sign
☿ Mercuryspeech, cleverness, strategyVirgo 0°47' ↑ exalted (retro, combust)
♃ Jupitergrowth, luck, judgementAquarius 26°35' (retrograde)
♀ Venuscharm, love, public affectionLeo 15°41'
♄ Saturnpatience, grind, delaysLeo 29°39' (combust)
☊ Rahuambition, obsession, expansionPisces 5°13'
☋ Ketuletting go, detachmentVirgo 5°13'

Every figure in that table is our engine's output for his birth date and place, and every one of them is stable at any minute of that day.

LESSON 03

Why "which sign" actually matters

Every planet has signs where it is comfortable and signs where it struggles. Same planet, different room, different output.

  • Exalted (best spot) — the one sign where a planet performs at its absolute peak.
  • Home ground (own sign) — the planet owns the place. Full strength, no permission needed.
  • Debilitated (weakest spot) — it is working with the handbrake on.
  • Everywhere else (neutral) — a guest. Functional, not special.
His scorecard: one planet exalted (Mercury), one on home ground (Mars), one debilitated (Moon), and the remaining six neutral. Having a top-strength placement and a bottom-strength placement in the same chart is common; having them be the mind (Moon) and the intellect (Mercury) is what makes this one interesting to read.
LESSON 04

Combustion — when a planet gets too close to the Sun

Sit a planet close enough to the Sun and Vedic astrology calls it combustastangata, "burnt". The traditional reading is that the planet's own agenda gets drowned out by the Sun's.

It matters here more than on most pages, because his chart has two of them, and they are extremely close in.

His: Mercury is 0.19° from the Sun and Saturn is 0.94° from it. For scale, the full Moon is about half a degree wide — so Mercury is sitting closer to the Sun than the width of the Moon in the sky.

Which produces the chart's central tension: Mercury is in the one sign where it is strongest, and simultaneously burnt and retrograde. Peak equipment, difficult conditions, same square of sky.
LESSON 05

Dashas — why timing is usually the whole game

This is the bit most people have never heard of, and it is normally the most useful.

Planets do not all act at once. They take turns running a life, for years at a stretch, in a fixed order that the Moon's position sets at birth. Vedic astrology calls a planet's turn a dasha, and the lifetime sequence is the Vimshottari dasha.

Two separate things come out of that: the order the lords run in, and the dates each turn starts and ends. The order comes from which nakshatra the Moon is in. The dates come from where inside that nakshatra it sits. Those are not equally knowable.

His order, computed:
Saturn → Mercury → Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter

His dates: we are not printing any, and the next lesson shows exactly why not.
LESSON 06

Why this page has no dasha dates on it

Most celebrity astrology pages will hand you a tidy dasha table for him, with years. We ran the numbers, and here is what we found instead.

We computed his chart at ten-minute intervals across all 24 hours of 17 September 1950 — 144 charts — and watched what moved.

What stayed put: eight of the nine grahas never budged from their sign, nakshatra or dignity all day. His Moon stayed in Scorpio and stayed debilitated at every single minute.

What moved: the Moon's nakshatra. It crosses from Vishakha into Anuradha at about 01:53 IST. So Anuradha holds for 92.2% of the day — and every circulating birth time for him falls on the Anuradha side, which is why the order in Lesson 05 starts with Saturn.

What fell apart completely: the dates. Across that sweep, the end of his first mahadasha lands anywhere from 1950 to 1969 — an 18.9-year spread. And the mahadasha running today comes out as Rahu, Mars or Moon depending on the minute you choose.

That is the whole reason. The Moon travels roughly 13° per day and a nakshatra is 13°20' wide, so in one day the Moon sweeps nearly a full nakshatra — and its position inside that nakshatra is precisely what sets the dasha clock. Without a verified minute, the order is real and the dates are invented. We publish the first and refuse the second.

LESSON 07

What we genuinely cannot tell you

Here is where most celebrity astrology sites quietly cheat, and we will not.

A chart has two halves. Which sign each planet is in only needs the date, so everything above is solid. And the houses, which need the exact minute of birth, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours.

His birth time is not verified. Multiple different times circulate for him, with no documented source trail behind any of them, and the standard astrology-data reliability scale rates his data DD — its lowest grade, meaning "conflicting or unverified".

So on this page you will not see a lagna, a "10th house of career", a manglik verdict, or a dated dasha table. Other sites will give you all four. Ask them which birth minute they used, and where they got it.
LESSON 08

Reading a stellium — the skill this chart teaches

Since his chart is built around a pile-up, it is a good one to learn the idea on.

When several grahas crowd into one sign, astrologers read them as blended rather than separate. They share the same sign's conditions and colour each other's output, instead of each running its department independently from its own corner.

His: Sun, Mercury and Ketu in Virgo, with Saturn just 21 arcminutes back in Leo alongside Venus. Authority, intellect, detachment, discipline and charm are not spread across five parts of the wheel here — four of them are literally inside one nakshatra. Whatever conditions apply to that patch of sky apply to nearly the whole set at once.

Quick answers

What people ask about his kundli

FAQ 01

What is Narendra Modi's birth time and place?

His birth place is documented — Vadnagar, in Gujarat's Mehsana district — and his birth date is 17 September 1950. His birth time is not verified. Several different times circulate on astrology sites, none with a documented source, and the standard reliability scale rates his birth data DD, its lowest grade. This page therefore publishes only what holds without a confirmed minute: his zodiac signs, his nakshatra, and his dasha lord order. No houses, no lagna, no dated dasha periods.

FAQ 02

What is Narendra Modi's zodiac sign and nakshatra?

By Vedic reckoning his Moon sign — his rashi — is Scorpio, and the Moon there is in its debilitation sign. That is one of the more searched claims about him and it does check out: our engine puts the Moon in Scorpio at every minute of his birth date, so it needs no birth time at all. His janma nakshatra is Anuradha (pada 2 at the commonly quoted time), which is what fixes his dasha order. His Vedic Sun sign is Virgo — Vedic (sidereal) and Western (tropical) zodiacs calculate differently, which is why Western sources usually list him as a Virgo too, but by a different route. The full birth chart is above, computed rather than copied.

FAQ 03

Which mahadasha is Narendra Modi running now?

Honestly: nobody can tell you that, and we would rather say so than pick one. We computed his chart every ten minutes across his entire birth date, and the mahadasha running today comes out as Rahu, Mars or Moon depending on the minute chosen. His first mahadasha's end date swings across an 18.9-year range over the same sweep. What is genuinely fixed by his nakshatra is the order of the lords — Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter — and that is all we publish.

FAQ 04

Does his kundli predict the 2029 election?

No, and we do not publish election predictions. That applies to every political figure on this site, and it is an editorial rule rather than a comment on any individual. Two reasons: an election is a collective public event that a single birth chart is not a mechanism for forecasting, and the timing tools that such a claim would rest on — dashas with actual dates — do not exist for this chart, as FAQ 03 explains. Any page giving you a confident year-by-year political forecast from his kundli has assumed a birth minute it is not showing you.

Why three cards say “file photo”. Timeline cards 4 and 5 carry photographs actually taken during the period each one describes — the 2013 card is from his time as Chief Minister, the 2014 card from the UN General Assembly address the card itself mentions. Cards 1 to 3 cover 1950 to 2001, and no freely-licensed photograph of him from before 2006 clears our licence gates, so each of those three carries a clearly-labelled later photograph instead. We have put the earliest images we could find on the earliest cards, which is why he visibly ages down the column, but a file photo is a file photo and the caption says so on the card itself rather than in the footnotes.

His birth time is not verified (Rodden DD). We therefore publish only what the birth date settles on its own: planet signs, degrees, dignities and nakshatra. We deliberately publish no lagna, no houses, no manglik verdict and no dated dasha periods. The dasha lord order shown is fixed by his nakshatra; its boundaries are not dateable without a verified birth minute, and a ten-minute sweep of his full birth date puts the end of his first mahadasha anywhere across an 18.9-year range.

About. Narendra Modi is a serving head of government. This page is a description of a publicly discussed birth chart alongside dated, public-record biographical facts, and nothing more. It takes no position for or against him, his party, his policies or any political question, contains no election predictions, and makes no claim that any astrological placement caused or explains any political event or outcome. Astrological interpretation is offered for entertainment and education only, and is not a statement of fact about anyone's life. Where a reading would require a birth time nobody has verified, we say so rather than supply one.
