AishwaryaRai Bachchan

ऐश्वर्या राय बच्चन

Venus — the beauty planet — is the most ordinary thing in her chart. The only planet on home ground is Mars.

1 NOV 1973 · MANGALORE, KARNATAKA

TL;DR

The beauty planet is unremarkable.

Every profile of her leads with the same word. So you would expect Venus — the graha of beauty, art and charm — to be blazing in this birth chart. It isn't. Venus sits in Sagittarius as a plain, neutral guest. The only planet standing in its own sign is Mars.
And the two grahas that hand out status for free are the two weakest things here: the Sun is debilitated in Libra, and Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn. So the chart's own emphasis is the opposite of her public image — not grace, but drive.

There is a second reason Mars matters on this page. Mars is the manglik planet, and "is Aishwarya Rai manglik" is the single most-searched question about her kundli. We answer it properly further down — including the part most sites skip.
The surprise
Venus, neutral
The planet of beauty is an ordinary guest in Sagittarius. Nothing special by dignity.
The strong one
Mars, own sign
In Aries, its own house, and retrograde. The one graha here on home ground.
The weak ones
Sun ↓ Jupiter ↓
Both debilitated. The two planets that are supposed to make status effortless.
The nakshatra
Purva Ashadha
Her Moon's star. Its traditional name translates as the undefeated.
Before you read on: her birth time is not verified. Two times circulate — 4:05am and 7:20am — and neither has a documented source. Everything above is settled by her birth date alone and holds at both. Everything that needs the minute is flagged, not guessed. See exactly what changes →
The glow-up graph

Runner-up. Miss World. Full circle.

Roughly how the country saw her, decade by decade — and the one thing the chart can honestly say underneath it.

How to read this: the line is public standing, top is global-icon, bottom is early and unknown. The bar underneath is her dasha lord order — the sequence of planetary periods her chart runs through. It carries no dates, and that is deliberate: see the birth-time gate below.

The runner-up who won bigger

Miss World 19 November 1994, Sun City
  • Born in Mangalore, Karnataka on 1 November 1973. She enrolled at Mumbai's Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture and left without finishing — the "trained architect" line you'll see repeated is not accurate.
  • Modelling came first, including the 1993 Pepsi commercial with Aamir Khan and Mahima Chaudhry. That ad, not the pageant, is what made her face nationally recognisable.
  • At Femina Miss India 1994 she lost — Sushmita Sen won. Aishwarya took the runner-up slot, which carried the Miss India World title. Seven months later she won Miss World at Sun City, South Africa, and Miss Photogenic with it.
🔭 The chart bit, honestly bounded: her Moon sits in Purva Ashadha, a nakshatra whose traditional epithet is "the undefeated" or "early victory". That holds at both candidate birth times. What we will not do is tell you which dasha was running in 1994 — that needs a birth minute nobody has.

1997–2012 · IRUVAR → THE JURY → THE PASSPORT YEARS

Two debuts, two Filmfares, one jury seat

First Indian actress on the Cannes feature jury, 2003
  • Her actual debut was Iruvar — Tamil, directed by Mani Ratnam, released 14 January 1997. …Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya followed on 15 August and was only her Hindi debut. The two get swapped constantly.
  • Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards twice: for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (2000 ceremony) and Devdas (2003 ceremony). Two competitive wins, not three — the 2013 Centenary award was honorary.
  • Cannes 2002 was her first festival appearance, with Devdas. In 2003 she joined the feature-film jury and became a global L'Oréal ambassador — the start of a red-carpet run now past twenty editions.
  • Then the crossover run: Bride & Prejudice (2004), Provoked and The Last Legion (both 2007), The Pink Panther 2 (2009). India gave her the Padma Shri in 2009 — not the Padma Bhushan, which is the usual upgrade error — and France made her a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on 1 November 2012, her thirty-ninth birthday to the day.
🔭 Jupiter — the graha of formal honours, teachers and institutional blessing — is debilitated in Capricorn here, the weakest placement the system has. The honours arrived across this stretch anyway. That is the sort of thing a chart describes badly and a career describes well.

2015–2023 · THE RETURN

Back, then all the way back to the start

Ponniyin Selvan I (2022) & II (2023) — Mani Ratnam
  • Jazbaa (2015, Sanjay Gupta) ended a roughly five-year gap from leading roles. Sarbjit and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil followed in 2016.
  • Then Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and II (2023) — both directed by Mani Ratnam, the same director who gave her Iruvar twenty-five years earlier. She won IIFA Utsavam and SIIMA Critics Best Actress (Tamil) for the second film.
  • One thing that is not on the shelf: a National Film Award. She has never won one, despite how often it is claimed.
🔭 Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio in this chart, and Saturn is retrograde in Gemini. Retrogrades are the classic "return to it later" signature — a chart with three of them (Mars too) is one the tradition reads as circling back rather than moving in a straight line. Read it as texture, not prophecy.
The part other sites skip

Two birth times. Two different charts.

Her birth time is rated Rodden C — "caution, no source". Two candidates circulate, 4:05am and 7:20am, three hours and fifteen minutes apart. We ran her chart at both, then swept the entire day in ten-minute steps to see what survives. Here is the actual result.

✅ What holds at every time of that day

We computed 144 charts across 1 November 1973 in Mangalore. These placements were identical in all 144, so they need no birth time at all — the date and place are enough:

  • Sun debilitated in Libra (Swati nakshatra)
  • Mars in its own sign, Aries (Ashwini), retrograde
  • Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn (Shravana)
  • Moon, Venus and Rahu all in Sagittarius — Venus and Rahu both in Mula
  • Saturn and Ketu in Gemini (Ardra) · Mercury in Scorpio (Vishakha), retrograde

Everything this page states as fact comes from that list. It is the whole reason the page can say anything at all.

⚠️ What the missing minute actually costs
Her ascendant flips

At 4:05am the rising sign is Virgo. At 7:20am it is Libra. The changeover happens at about 5:26am — right between the two candidates.

Across the full day, all twelve signs take a turn rising. That is why there is no lagna, no houses and no manglik verdict anywhere on this page.

Every dasha date slides

The dasha order is fixed by her Moon's nakshatra, and that holds at both times. The dates do not.

Her first mahadasha ends in June 1984 if she was born at 4:05am, and January 1982 if at 7:20am. Swept across the whole day, that single endpoint moves anywhere from December 1973 to June 1987 — a 13.5-year spread.

☊ Rahu2007 → Jun 20252005 → Jan 20232 yr 5 mo

Look at the Mars row. On one reading her Mars period is still running in early 2007; on the other it finished two years before that. Any sentence of the form "she was in her X period when Y happened" is decided entirely by which unsourced time the writer picked. So we don't write those sentences.

What we publish, and why. The lord order — Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury — is real, because it is set by her Moon's nakshatra, and her Moon is in Purva Ashadha at both candidate times. (For completeness: the Moon leaves Purva Ashadha for Uttara Ashadha at about 6:30pm that evening, so the order holds for 77% of the day and for both times anyone actually claims.) The dates are not real, so they are not here. No current-dasha claim, no "her Miss World year fell in her such-and-such period". Those are inventions dressed up as computation.
Set the record straight

Seven things the internet gets wrong

This is where a celebrity page normally runs gossip. We'd rather run facts. Every correction below is checkable against the public record — and every one of them is something you'll find stated confidently elsewhere.

🏆  "She won Miss India 1994"

  • No. Sushmita Sen won Femina Miss India 1994. Aishwarya Rai was first runner-up, which carried the Miss India World title and the ticket to the Miss World pageant.
  • Sen went on to win Miss Universe and Rai won Miss World — the same year, from the same national contest. The runner-up slot is the whole story, and losing it is what set up winning the other one.

🎬  "Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya was her debut"

  • It was her Hindi debut, released 15 August 1997. Her actual first film was Iruvar, in Tamil, directed by Mani Ratnam, released 14 January 1997 — seven months earlier.

🇫🇷  "First Indian on the Cannes jury"

  • Not quite. Mrinal Sen (1982), Mira Nair (1990) and Arundhati Roy (2000) were all on Cannes juries before her.
  • The accurate version is still a first: in 2003 she became the first Indian actress on the Cannes feature-film competition jury.

📐  "She's a trained architect"

  • She enrolled at the Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture in Mumbai and left before completing the course to model full-time. Enrolled is not the same as qualified.

🎖️  "Padma Bhushan" and "National Film Award"

  • Her Indian civilian honour is the Padma Shri, in 2009 — the fourth-highest, not the third. She has not received the Padma Bhushan.
  • She has also never won a National Film Award, which is asserted surprisingly often. Her two competitive Filmfare Best Actress wins are for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas.

🌙  "Her nakshatra is Mula"

  • This one is half-right, and it is an easy mistake to make honestly. Her Moon is in Purva Ashadha — and the Moon's nakshatra is what "your nakshatra" normally means.
  • But Venus and Rahu are both in Mula in this chart, sitting in the same sign as the Moon. So a chart-reader glancing at Sagittarius sees Mula and repeats it. Different planets, different stars.

🔭 The chart bit: both are Sagittarius nakshatras, which is exactly why they get confused. Purva Ashadha is ruled by Venus; Mula is ruled by Ketu.

⏰  "Her birth time is 4:05am" (or 7:20am)

  • Both are quoted with total confidence, by different sites, with no source behind either. In the Rodden rating system used by astrological databases, that is a C — "caution, no source".
  • A page that states one of them as fact and then hands you houses and a manglik verdict built on it is not computing anything. It is picking.
What the sky wrote

Four placements. Four receipts.

Each card pairs a computed placement with a real photo of Aishwarya herself, from a moment that fits that placement's story — never a picture of the planet.

MARS · ARIES

The strongest thing in the chart is also the manglik planet

  • Mars rules drive, stamina and the willingness to fight for a position. In this chart it sits in Aries — its own sign, the only graha here on home ground, and it is retrograde.
  • Mars is also the planet the whole manglik question hangs on. That is why "is Aishwarya Rai manglik" outsearches every other question about her kundli.
  • Here is the honest limit: manglik status depends on which house Mars occupies, and houses need the exact birth minute. Her Mars sign is settled. Her Mars house is not, and cannot be.
🔭 Mars in Aries — own sign, retrograde. Strong by dignity, and completely undecided by house. Both halves of that sentence are true at once.

SUN · LIBRA
DEBILITATED
Sun · in Libra · weakest spot

Fame without the planet of self-assertion

  • The Sun governs ego, authority and standing at the centre of the room. Hers is in Libra, the sign of the Sun's traditional debilitation.
  • Libra is Venus's sign, and the tradition reads a debilitated Sun there as a self that works through others — partnership, collaboration, being chosen rather than seizing.
  • It rhymes oddly well with a career whose defining moments were awarded by panels: a pageant jury, a Filmfare jury, a Cannes jury seat, a state honour.
🔭 Sun in Libra — debilitated. One of only two weak placements in the chart, and it is the fame planet.

JUPITER · CAPRICORN
DEBILITATED
Jupiter · in Capricorn · weakest spot

The blessing planet, also running on empty

  • Jupiter is the graha of teachers, honours, expansion and institutional approval. In Capricorn it is debilitated — Capricorn wants proof of work, and Jupiter would rather bestow.
  • So this chart has two debilitated planets, and they are the two that hand out status for free. Nothing here is set up to arrive unearned.
  • The honours still came — a Padma Shri, a French knighthood of arts and letters, a Cannes jury seat. The chart does not explain that. It just declines to take credit for it.
🔭 Jupiter in Capricorn — debilitated. The second weak spot, and the reason "effortless" is the wrong word for this chart.

MOON · PURVA ASHADHA
+ VENUS & RAHU IN MULA
Moon, Venus & Rahu · all in Sagittarius

Three planets in one sign — and the star called "undefeated"

  • Her Moon — the rashi, the thing Indian astrology actually means by "your sign" — is in Sagittarius, in the nakshatra Purva Ashadha, whose traditional name translates roughly as the undefeated or the earlier victory.
  • Purva Ashadha is ruled by Venus. So Venus does reach this chart — not by sitting somewhere powerful itself, but by owning the star her Moon happens to occupy. It is an indirect route, and it is the only Venus story the data supports.
  • Venus and Rahu sit alongside the Moon in the same sign, both in Mula — the nakshatra of roots and of pulling things up by them.
🔭 Moon in Sagittarius, Purva Ashadha pada 2 or 3 (the pada is one of the few things the two candidate birth times disagree on). This nakshatra is also what fixes her dasha lord order.

The kundli people look for next

A large share of the searches that land on a page like this are really matching questions — most often about her and Abhishek Bachchan, whom she married on 20 April 2007. Vedic astrology has a whole 36-point guna Milan system built for exactly that: comparing two birth charts point by point.

We are not going to run it here, for a reason worth stating plainly: guna Milan is driven by the Moon's nakshatra of both people, and while hers is settled, his is not published with any verified birth data. A compatibility score built on one confirmed chart and one guess is a number with nothing behind it.

You can run the real thing on your own chart, with a birth time you actually know, from the link at the bottom of this page.

Actually learn this

Astrology, but make it make sense

Zero background needed. Read this once and you can decode the birth chart above yourself — no astrologer required.

LESSON 01

What a birth chart even is

A kundli, or janam kundli, is a photograph of the sky taken from the exact spot and second someone was born. Where each planet was sitting, frozen.

Vedic astrology treats that snapshot as the raw material a person was handed — not their fate, their starting kit.

LESSON 02

Your "sign" is probably not the one you know

The zodiac sign you read in a magazine is your Sun sign, worked out with the Western (tropical) zodiac. Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is offset by roughly 24 degrees, and it cares far more about the Moon.

Her Moon sits in Sagittarius — so in Indian terms her rashi is Dhanu. Her Vedic Sun sign is Libra. Western sites will usually call her a Scorpio, because they are using a different zodiac to answer a differently-shaped question. Neither is lying; they are different systems.
LESSON 03

Dignity: the same planet, stronger or weaker

A planet in some signs works easily, and in others it fights the furniture. Four labels cover almost everything: own sign (at home), exalted (best possible), debilitated (weakest), and neutral (a guest).

In her chart: Mars is in its own sign. The Sun and Jupiter are debilitated. Everything else, Venus included, is a neutral guest. That single line is most of what this page has to say.
LESSON 04

Nakshatras: the 27 stars behind the 12 signs

Each sign is subdivided into finer slices called nakshatras — 27 of them around the whole circle, each about 13°20' wide, each with its own ruling planet and symbolism.

Sagittarius alone contains parts of three: Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha.

This is why "her nakshatra is Mula" circulates. Her Moon is in Purva Ashadha — but her Venus and Rahu genuinely are in Mula, in the same sign. Same neighbourhood, different houses on the street.
LESSON 05

Dashas: the planet whose turn it is

Vedic astrology doesn't treat a life as one flat chart. It divides it into long chapters called mahadashas, each governed by one planet, running in a fixed 120-year cycle.

Which planet goes first, and how much of its chapter is left at birth, is decided by exactly where the Moon sits inside its nakshatra at the moment of birth.

Hers runs Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury. That order is real and we publish it. The dates are not, and we don't — Lesson 06 explains why.
LESSON 06

Why a missing minute destroys the dates but not the order

Here is the bit that is genuinely counter-intuitive, and that most sites get wrong without realising.

The Moon moves about 12 to 13 degrees a day. A nakshatra is only 13°20' wide. So the Moon can stay inside one nakshatra for most of a day — which fixes the dasha order — while its position within that nakshatra sweeps almost the entire span. And it is that within-position that sets how much of the first chapter was already used up before birth.

For her, the order is rock solid. But the end of her first mahadasha lands in June 1984 at one candidate time and January 1982 at the other — and anywhere from December 1973 to June 1987 across the full day. Same nakshatra throughout. That is why you will not find a single dasha date on this page.
LESSON 07

What we genuinely can't tell you

A chart has two halves. Which sign each planet is in needs only the date — so everything above is solid. And the houses, which need the exact minute, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours.

Her birth time is rated Rodden C: two times in circulation, 4:05am and 7:20am, neither with a traceable source. Her ascendant is Virgo at the first and Libra at the second.

So you will not see us say "her seventh house of marriage" or "her tenth house of career" anywhere here. That would be a guess dressed as a fact. Other sites will do it. Ask them which of the two times they used, and why.
LESSON 08

So — is Aishwarya Rai manglik?

The most-searched question about her chart, and it deserves a real answer rather than a dodge in either direction.

What manglik means: Mars sitting in one of a specific set of houses counted from the ascendant — traditionally the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. It is a house-based judgement, start to finish.

What we can tell you for certain: her Mars is in Aries, its own sign, and retrograde. That is computed, and it holds at every minute of her birth date. A Mars in its own sign is, by dignity, a strong and well-placed Mars — which is worth knowing, because manglik discussion usually assumes an afflicted one.

What nobody can tell you: which house it falls in. Her ascendant is Virgo at 4:05am and Libra at 7:20am, and across the full day every one of the twelve signs rises at some point. Mars lands in a manglik house on some of those readings and not on others.

The honest verdict is that there is no verdict — not without a birth minute someone can actually source. Any site handing you a confident yes or no for her has quietly picked one of two unsourced times. If you want a real manglik reading, the one chart where it can actually be done properly is your own, because you know your birth time.
LESSON 09

Reading a chart without blaming it

One rule we hold to across every page here: a chart is used to describe a pattern, never to explain a real event in someone's life, and never to pass judgement on anyone's private business.

So on this page you will find her filmography, her honours, her pageant record and her chart — and nothing at all about her private life, because none of that is ours to interpret, and a birth chart is not evidence about anybody.

Quick answers

What people ask about her kundli

FAQ 01

What is Aishwarya Rai's birth time?

There is no verified birth time. Two circulate — 4:05am and 7:20am — and neither carries a documented source, which is why astrological databases rate her birth data Rodden C, meaning "caution, no source". The gap matters: her rising sign is Virgo at the first time and Libra at the second. This page therefore publishes only what her birth date settles — her zodiac signs, her nakshatra and her dasha lord order — and never houses, never a lagna, never a manglik verdict.

FAQ 02

What is Aishwarya Rai's zodiac sign and nakshatra?

By Vedic reckoning her Moon sign — the rashi, which is what "your sign" normally means in Indian astrology — is Sagittarius (Dhanu), and her birth nakshatra is Purva Ashadha, ruled by Venus. Her Vedic Sun sign is Libra, where the Sun is debilitated; Western astrology usually calls her a Scorpio because the tropical and sidereal zodiacs are offset by about 24 degrees. One correction worth making: her nakshatra is often given as Mula, which is not right for the Moon — though her Venus and Rahu genuinely are in Mula, in that same sign, which is almost certainly where the mix-up comes from.

FAQ 03

Is Aishwarya Rai manglik?

This cannot be answered honestly without a verified birth time, and anyone telling you otherwise has picked one of two unsourced times without saying so. Manglik status depends on which house Mars occupies — traditionally the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the ascendant — and houses need the exact birth minute. What is settled: her Mars is in Aries, its own sign, and retrograde, which by dignity is a strong Mars rather than an afflicted one. What is not settled, and cannot be from public data, is the house it sits in: her ascendant is Virgo at 4:05am and Libra at 7:20am, and Mars falls inside a manglik house on some readings of her day and outside one on others.

FAQ 04

Do Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan's kundlis match?

We don't publish a guna Milan score for them, and the reason is technical rather than coy. The 36-point kundli matching system is driven almost entirely by the Moon's nakshatra of both people. Hers is settled — Purva Ashadha, at either candidate birth time. His is not: there is no verified public birth time for Abhishek Bachchan either, so half of the calculation would be an assumption. A match score built on one real chart and one guess is a number with nothing behind it. The public record is that they married on 20 April 2007. You can run a genuine 36-guna match on your own chart, where you actually know the birth time, from the link below.

Timeline tile 1 is captioned "file photo" because it is not from the era its card describes — no freely-licensed photograph of her from before 2008 stays sharp at the size these tiles display. The timeline runs three tiles rather than four on purpose: a fourth candidate frame (Cannes 2013) was sharp and correctly licensed, but read as too close a visual match to the hero portrait, and shortening the section is the honest fix for that — never a second crop of a photograph already used elsewhere. The CTA background is the shared Bollywood-category atmosphere photo used identically across every actor page on this site; no identifiable individual appears in it.

Method. Every placement on this page is computed with the Swiss Ephemeris using the Lahiri ayanamsa — the same engine behind every AxtroShastra report — from her birth date and place. Because her birth time is disputed and unsourced (Rodden C: 4:05am versus 7:20am), we ran the chart at both candidate times and then swept the full day at ten-minute intervals, 144 charts in all. We publish only what was identical across every one of them, plus the dasha lord order, which is fixed by her Moon's nakshatra. We deliberately publish no ascendant, no houses, no manglik verdict and no dasha dates, because none of those survive the birth-time uncertainty. Where a claim depends on the minute, the page says so instead of choosing for you.

About. Biographical details on this page — her filmography, awards, honours, pageant record and marriage date — are matters of public record and are cited as such.
