Walked away from Test cricket mid-tour. No farewell match, ever.
- 30 December 2014: resigned the Test captaincy overnight, mid-series in Australia, handing over to Virat Kohli without a press conference.
- 10 July 2019: run out attempting a second run in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, India's chase collapsing around it. It turned out to be the last international innings he ever played.
- 15 August 2020: retirement announced with a quietly edited video on Instagram — no press conference, no build-up.
Retired from India. Not from the sport.
- His Jupiter mahadasha begins 14 May 2022 — the first multi-year period of his adult life not run by Rahu. He keeps captaining Chennai Super Kings and leads them to a fifth IPL title in 2023.
- Current sub-period: Saturn, July 2024 to January 2027 — a visibly metered version of him, a knee surgery, a lighter workload, batting lower down, openly talking about managing what's left rather than chasing more.
Everything you're actually here for
Sixteen years at the top means a few real storms. All of the below is public record — where he wasn't personally implicated, that travels with the claim in the same breath.
The 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing case named Gurunath Meiyappan — a Chennai Super Kings team official and son-in-law of then-BCCI president N. Srinivasan — as having passed on team information. A Supreme Court-appointed panel found him guilty; CSK (and Rajasthan Royals) were suspended from the IPL for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Dhoni was CSK's captain throughout. He was never named or charged in the case itself. He played the two suspension years for Rising Pune Supergiant, then returned to a reinstated CSK in 2018 — and won the title that same season, his third with the franchise.
The whole episode sits inside his long Rahu mahadasha. Rahu's classic reading is reputational heat by association — close enough to the fire to feel it, without ever being named in it.
It's also worth noting: the comeback title arrived the moment the ban lifted, still inside that same period.
10 July 2019, World Cup semi-final vs New Zealand at Old Trafford. Chasing 240, he was run out going for a second run with the equation still alive; India lost by 18 runs. No one knew it at the time, but it was his final international innings.
No retirement followed for over a year. He simply stopped being picked for Tests and T20Is, and wasn't part of the ODI XI again either.
The dying stretch of the same Rahu mahadasha that started his career in 2004. Rahu doesn't usually script a tidy ending — it tends to just go quiet.
15 August 2020, mid-way through an IPL season relocated to the UAE, he posted a music video edited with retirement visuals on Instagram — no press conference, no advance notice. The BCCI reportedly found out with everyone else.
He kept playing IPL for CSK that same year and every year after. The goodbye was only ever from the India cap, never from the sport.
Right at the closing stretch of Rahu, less than two years from its May 2022 handover to Jupiter. A dasha's final stretch is traditionally read as a time for closing things quietly rather than dramatically.

- Ranchi wasn't a recognised cricket pipeline in the late 1990s. His father worked as a pump operator at a state-owned steel-engineering firm.
- Between 2001 and 2003 he worked as a Travelling Ticket Examiner with South Eastern Railway in Kharagpur — a stable government job — while still trying to force his way into first-class cricket.
- Within four years of quitting that job for a full-time domestic contract, he was India's ODI captain. Within seven, a T20 World Cup winner. Within nine, an ODI World Cup–winning captain.
🔭 The chart bit: Mercury on home ground — a calculated, low-drama exit from a secure job at exactly the age most people are trying to get into one.

- CSK's two-year IPL ban (2016–17) was about a team official's conduct, not his. He captained a different franchise, Rising Pune Supergiant, through both suspended seasons without public complaint.
- CSK returned in 2018. Dhoni resumed the captaincy and won the title in his first season back — his third IPL title with the franchise.

Why "which sign" actually matters
Every planet has signs where it's comfortable and signs where it struggles. Same planet, wildly different output.
- Own sign (★) — home ground. Comfortable, reliable, does its job at full strength.
- Debilitated (↓) — its worst sign. Still works, just against friction.
- Everywhere else — in between, which is most planets in most charts.
Dashas — why timing is the whole game
This is the bit most people have never heard of, and it's usually where the real story is.
Your life splits into long stretches, each one run by a single planet. Fixed order, fixed lengths, decided by exactly where the Moon sat at birth. The technical name is dasha.
Sun (1981–87) → Moon (1987–97) → Mars (1997–2004) → Rahu (2004–2022) → Jupiter (2022–2038, current) → Saturn (2038–2057)
Look at that Rahu line. His ODI debut lands almost exactly at its start, and his international retirement lands inside its final two years. The entire India career fits inside one 18-year period.
Sub-periods — the chapters inside the chapter
An 18-year stretch is too blunt to be useful on its own, so each mahadasha splits again into sub-periods (antardashas), each handed to a different planet. That's how astrologers get from "this decade" to "this year."
What we can tell you — and where this page draws the line
A chart has two halves: the signs, which only need the date, and the houses — including the all-important rising sign, or lagna — which need the exact birth minute.
MS Dhoni's birth time is unusually well-documented for a public figure: 05:10 IST, family-confirmed to the astrological researcher Sanjay Rath's associate Seth in 2017, rated Rodden A — one of the more reliable ratings a celebrity birth time gets. An older 11:15 time also circulates on some sites; we've used the better-sourced 05:10 and haven't relied on the older one anywhere on this page.
So — is MS Dhoni manglik?
The most-asked astrology question about almost any Indian public figure, and here the honest answer is "we haven't computed that part."
Manglik status depends on which house Mars sits in — 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. That needs the lagna, which (per Lesson 06) isn't part of this page's published output even though his birth time is well-rated.
How to actually read that chart square
The grid earlier on this page is a South-Indian chart, the easiest of the three regional styles to learn because the signs never move.
Twelve boxes around the edge, one per zodiac sign, always in the same places. Pisces top-left, then clockwise: Aries, Taurus, Gemini down the right, and so on. Memorise the ring once and you can read any South-Indian chart for the rest of your life.
The planet symbols get written into whichever box they were in. That's the whole trick — a chart is just nine symbols dropped into twelve fixed boxes.
Aspects — planets shouting across the chart
A planet doesn't only affect the box it sits in. It also throws influence at other boxes from a distance. Astrologers call this an aspect, and it's why a planet can matter for an area of life it isn't sitting in.
The basic rule: every planet aspects the box directly opposite it — seven signs away. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each get extra reach on top of that.
Why you should care: it's the usual answer to "but that planet isn't even in my career box, so why does it keep coming up?" It's shouting from across the room.
Retrograde and combust, without the drama
Two words that get thrown around a lot and sound far worse than they are.
Retrograde means the planet appeared to move backwards across the sky. It isn't actually reversing — it's an optical effect of Earth overtaking it, the way a slower car seems to slide backwards when you pass it. Traditionally it makes a planet's themes more internal and slower to show results.
Combust means the planet sat very close to the Sun and was lost in its glare. The traditional reading is that its strength gets dimmed — not cancelled, dimmed.
Neither is a disaster. Plenty of people with several retrograde planets have perfectly ordinary lives. Anyone selling you a remedy for a retrograde is selling you something.
What this can and can't tell you
Worth being blunt, since this page has spent a while treating a chart as a serious object.
- It can describe tendencies, and it can time long stretches — that part is arithmetic, and two astrologers with the same birth data will compute the same periods.
- It can't tell you what someone will do with those tendencies. Two people with near-identical charts live completely different lives.
- It definitely can't give exact dates for a death, a diagnosis, or a match result — and anyone who does is guessing with confidence.
